Throwing in some tips and tricks as a multi-year TIFF attendee:
Plan your schedule using TIFFR
TIFFR.com is a great website for organizing the shortlist of movies you’re interested in as well as what your schedule will look like. It usually is available a day or two after the full schedule drops on the official TIFF website. Link is here.
Off-sale Never Means “Sold-Out”
People complain every year about TIFF never having tickets available for the most popular films. The lower your membership tier is (or if you have no membership at all), the more this will be the case for you. But you should not give up – tickets open up all the time once the public sale starts, up to the morning of the screening. So always check back – you may be surprised at what you can get with enough diligence and patience.
But of course, always have a few backup options in case you end up not getting your first choices.
Explore Beyond the Big Premieres
While the Gala screenings and red carpets draw the most attention, TIFF’s strength lies in its diverse programming. Sections like Contemporary World Cinema, Midnight Madness, and Discovery showcase incredible international and emerging talent. These screenings often have more availability and provide hidden gems you won’t want to miss.
Dress Comfortably (But Be Camera-Ready)
You’ll likely spend your day bouncing between venues, standing in lines, and sitting through back-to-back films. Wear comfortable shoes and layers since Toronto weather in September can shift quickly. If you’re hoping to snap a red-carpet photo or attend a Q&A, it doesn’t hurt to look a little polished too.
Take Advantage of Q&As and Panels
One of TIFF’s highlights is the post-screening Q&As with directors, writers, and actors. These sessions provide unique insight into the filmmaking process and often create memorable moments you won’t get anywhere else. TIFF also hosts industry panels and talks that can deepen your appreciation of cinema and storytelling.
Get to Venues Early
Arriving early ensures you get a good seat, and it’s also the best way to experience the festival atmosphere—chatting with fellow film lovers, spotting industry insiders, or even catching a glimpse of celebrities slipping in. For rush lines, arriving well ahead of showtime improves your chances of getting in.
Balance Your Schedule
It’s tempting to book as many films as possible, but festival fatigue is real. Make sure to leave room for breaks, meals, and downtime. Some of the most fun at TIFF comes from hanging out in the festival district, grabbing a bite in between screenings, and soaking in the energy of downtown Toronto.
Don’t Forget the City Itself
Toronto is one of the most diverse and vibrant cities in the world. Take time to explore its neighborhoods, cultural landmarks, and food scene while you’re here. Kensington Market, Queen Street West, and the Distillery District are all within easy reach of TIFF venues.
Stay Hydrated and Pack Snacks
Long days at the festival mean limited time for proper meals. Bring a water bottle and a few snacks to keep your energy up, especially if you’re hopping from one screening to another.
Embrace the Spirit of Discovery
TIFF is not just about seeing celebrities or catching the year’s buzziest Oscar contenders. It’s about the thrill of discovering films and filmmakers you might never have encountered otherwise. Go in with an open mind, take a chance on something outside your comfort zone, and you’ll walk away with unforgettable experiences.
The Toronto International Film Festival is a celebration of cinema in all its forms. Whether you’re there for the star-studded premieres, the indie gems, or simply the love of film, a little preparation will help you make the most of it. Remember: the best TIFF experiences often happen when you least expect them.
